PowerPoint

Have you ever been sitting in class half asleep copying down notes from a PowerPoint but not listening to a word the teacher is saying?  Well I have and I feel as though most students have done this at least once in their lives.  PowerPoint can be very effective but they also can be distracting and not be useful to students, it's just all in the way you present your PowerPoint.  I enjoyed learning about the many ways you could use PowerPoint in your classroom.  For our project on PowerPoint I made an interactive multiple choice game for kindergarten age students on telling time.  I liked learning about hyperlinks, adding videos and making the PowerPoint interactive.  Even though I already knew about PowerPoint this probably was the most helpful tool I've learned about.

Pros
  • Easy way of presenting information
  • A common tool that everyone knows how to work
  • So many possibilities and tools to use on it
  • Easy to work
  • Easy to access
Cons
  • Can be boring for the students
  • Can loose children's interest
  • Isn't a new and exciting tool
  • Doesn't excite or keep students focused if used in the wrong way

  1. I agree with you. I have sat through so many boring lectures that were slides of words. It is also boring when the presentation is read word for word off the slides. It is important that Mr. Smith taught us the positive uses of the tool. I enjoyed creating my own lesson through interactive slides, and I hope we can do this again.

  2. That is why we must understand how to improve the functions of using powerpoints to reduce the fact that they are teacher-dominated. Mr. Smiths teaching on using a powerpoint to enhance your lesson was well demonstrated and more fun to create than your traditional powerpoint.

  3. I agree 100%. Mr. Smith taught us things I have already heard about but brought it forth in a new way. Weird how with just one small change it can turn the whole outlook around.

  5. Powerpoint presentations are always powerpoint presentations. It is up to you, the presenter to make the information worth presenting. Meaningful, insightful, interesting, creative. These are all aspects of powerpoints that need to be harnessed by the teacher to create an instructive and fun lecture.

  6. Thanks for the mentions. This kind of feedback is good for teachers. Reflection is very important both as a teacher and a student. We reverse the roles, you are now the teacher, how do you get your students to think about their learning and reflect on the experience?
